I enjoyed this delightful, emotional, well-written, sympathetic book, with a suspenseful plot, and interesting finely drawn characters. It can be read on many levels. It is a human drama, a power play between good and evil, a battle between God and the devil, and it is about the human duty to make the right choice.

Sarah is nineteen years old. She has always been sick and deformed, just semi-human watching life from the side, and is now in the hospital about to die. Abraham, an angel begs God to take pity on her and God consents. He turns her into a beautiful woman, grants her a life of six months, and transports her to Austria in 1900, six months before she will be born in her present deformed state. Abraham is told that he and the angel Ruth will accompany her during the six months, but they will lack the power to persuade her or help her when the time comes that she will have to choose.

We read about Sarah's reactions to her beauty, the two angels, and being told that she will die in six months. We read how she meets with Colonel Von Krein, a kind teddy bear of a man, and his twenty-three year old nephew, shy Nicholas, how she falls in love with Nicholas and he with her, and how she struggles whether to tell Nicholas that she will die in six months. We read about other pleasant people such as Karl Berger, his wife, and their two slightly retarded very kind twin sons, and about Eva, a fifty year old widow, who has the unusual skill of foretelling the future, who sees that Sarah will face a terrible danger.

This danger will come from Count Schafberg, a tall, rich, dark man with the power to control people's minds, who wants Sarah, and who plans to use her love for Nicholas and he for her as a means of gaining his control.
