I started Split with no expectations, and from the first few pages fell completely into the present-and-past world the author has created. This novel was like a gust of fresh air, unlike anything I've read in ages and a story I was unable to put down. The dialogue is fresh and tart, like a crisp fall apple. The narration is perfectly paced and full of surprises: quirky details, little twists, unexpected observations. The two time periods, and the transitions between them, blend seamlessly. The main character, Pilgrim, is clearly the same person in both periods, yet she is changed utterly, and the change seems natural and heart-breaking, inevitable. The scenes between her and her twin, April, are wonderfully controlled, filled with simmering subtext, and deeply emotional. The subtext is a big part of what I enjoyed about the book. So much is conveyed underneath the dialogue, the characters’ movements, even the settings, without the author coming and out and saying it. The result is a book that is both spare and rich: beautiful, unfussy prose with an electric current underneath. Condensed, but never heavy. The book’s curious lightness—in part from its pacing, and certainly from its tartness—over top of its meaningfulness is simply wonderful.
