Having read most of Linda Howard's books and enjoyed them, I was a bit surprised that I simply could not enjoy this one. The story was well written, as I would have expected, but the characters and the plot itself was one that I did not enjoy.I saw Sarah as the epitome of a victimized woman, willing to put up with near rape and of verbal abuse...all in the name of "love". What she had done was marry controlling, selfish man and made endless excuses for his horrible behavior hoping he would change. She was the stereotypical abused wife.
I skimmed through most of the book hoping she would eventually realize her mistake, but it didn't happen. Too bad.

Linda Howard's book have well developed characters, good story line, not terribly predictable (scripted) and characters you like and really feel for. Her romances have just enough romance without being boring. I go on binges and re-read all her books in a row again and again.
I had to squint to read this and not because of eyesight!! I do not know a person on the face of this earth that would hold on, hold out or put up with this type of abuse. I get that he lost his family. I understand that he was hurting still but come on!! I just can not articulate exactly how I felt about this book... If this is your first book by her to consider then Do Not read it. I’ve read countless stories by her but this... no! It left me almost angry. Wasted time, wasted money.
I've recently discovered and become a fan of Linda Howard. I enjoy her romances and her writing style & this one just gripped me from the first page and didn't let go until the end.
I totally loved Sarah's Child & it has become one of my all time favorite love stories. What happened to Rome's family was harrowing and while I wanted to clobber him over the head because of some of his actions towards Sarah, I thought Howard did a good job to help us understand why he behaved the way he did.
Rome and Sarah were two people I wanted to make it and I thought they fit and balanced each other out. I liked Sarah's quiet inner strength and that she gave Rome patience, love and understanding. There were times I did wish she would stand up to him more (one thing in particular) but that was my feelings, not who Sarah is. And the person Sarah is & the unconditional love she had for Rome, is just what he needed to be able to embrace love even more & finally wake up and see what he was missing.
Any story that has me completely involved and tugs at all my heart strings and makes me emotionally invested in the characters, is a winner for me.
This is a story of hope and I was so happy to see Rome and Sarah get their much deserved happy ending. It wasn't an easy journey, but it made the destination that much more satisfying.
Linda Howard had always been one of my favorite authors. Before I had all of her books, including Sarah’s Child. This is one of my all time favorite books, poignant and fulfilling and of course HEA. I would certainly recommend it and all of Ms. Howard’s books. This book was followed by a novella featuring one of the characters from this book.
I have 2 copies of this book in paperback and now on my kindle. I absolutely love Linda Howard's books.. next I'm going to read Sarah's Child's sequel, Almost Fovever. There is a 3rd book to this little series. I 'think' the name is " Bluebird Christmas ". It's about Derek Taliferro. Very short book, if you can buy it does complete the story. However, if anyone can let me know if has it as a huh book I'll be grateful. I think that you'll love the story of Rome and Sarah Matthews. There are a lot of ups and downs for this couple, but I will not tell you the ending. You need to read for yourself! Enjoy.
My all-time favourite Linda Howard book. I first read Sarah's Child decades before. It broke my heart then and has every subsequent time I've read it.
Rome and Sarah. Great couple. And heartbreaking. I felt so bad that Sarah had loved him before, during and after his marriage. And how heartbreaking for Rome to lose his wife and sons the way he did. And it was completely understandable to me why he refused to let himself love or care that deeply again for anyone else.
But when the baby came...my heart ached for Rome, for Sarah, for their child. It was just absolutely heart wrenching.
The book is well written. But the characters..... are really.... not people you can relate to
Rome especially is not someone you can like. The author puts us in his mind-space too, but he comes across as totally selfish and wierd. Yes you feel for him as a man who has lost wife and two sons, but overall he comes across as a not so nice person.
Sarah's character is very well defined - her choices clearly thought out.
The only jarring thing was her agreeing to keep her child away from him (he won't even know it was there). Really. Even if it is done with the hope that over time Rome will come around, how would that affect the child - if he took years to come around. What mother would do that to their child? Especillay considering Rome's attitude all throughout the pregnancy and even after birth at the hospital.
Yes we are supposed to understand Rome's POV, and yes sure to some extent we could, but cannot understand Sarah's POV on this.
===
However, the author get's a thumbs up. Will look for her books.
