Probably more a 4.5, but hey I'll give it the nudge upward. It is another story centered on a teenage.

The writing is well done, good pacing, characters (for the most part) are believable and interact well. Trying not have a spoiler, but there are some characters that came off as a little too Goodie McGoodie, with their ability to forgive. I'm having trouble with this review as far as trying to not put in spoilers, though the plot is largely predictable. Despite that, I enjoyed reading the character work her way through her choices, and the action sequences. I do wish that she'd been a little more bad ass, it turns out that she is more tentative and not uber than I'd expect with her upbringing. I can't say there is anything terrible original in the book, however, some days you just want that easy, well paced fantasy book to kick back with. This was that book for me.

The Threshold Child The Threshold Trilogy Book 1 edition by Callie Kanno Children eBooks Reviews

This book had me at the beginning. But repetitive descriptions and rambling narritive had me scanning pages and skipping detail. Despite my not reading every paragraph I was able to keep up and understand what was happening. This book had potential but I am not interested enough to finish the series.
The author gets extra warm feelings from me by killing off important support characters. In this type of novel it help build up the "rightness" of the quest. Adesina has been trained from childhood to serve her nation as a warrior and a spy. When she is selected to combat a group of seditious magic users. Things are not what they seem in this plot and the twists really enhance the plot line.

The world building is well done and the character development is smooth and build real feeling for the main characters. Now that is my kind of novel. The end is complete but foreshadows a continued struggle. I look forward to the next novel.
If you enjoy context to help define and understand how and why a character reacts to events and situations - this is a good book for you. I initially was impatient for the "action" to begin but the became more and more intrigued with the primary character's past because there were hints along the way that it was exceedingly convoluted. Having the patience to get through the context build was worth it in the last several chapters. I have ordered the next book in the series and looked for the 3rd installment but found that has not available yet.
Adesina had been raised her whole life as a child of the Shimat Order. She is the best Shi her age and is expected to one day become among the greatest Shimat of all time. But she doesn't know the truth about her past or the Order she so faithfully serves.

Okay first of all, Adesina, coolest name ever I love it!! And she is so talented. She is just the best protagonist because even though she is extremely special she is also young and inexperienced and makes mistakes so it's not like the story is unbelievable either.

I really loved this book. There were some elements in the plot that I didn't like and it wasn't what I was expecting it to be, but I still found that I enjoyed it. Also I have to say I would have liked Adesina to end up with one of the other characters but I'm not entirely disappointed. But it seems like there will be a sequel. (At least there had better be!)
I was totally engaged in this book and less than half way through ordered the second in the series. (I will order the third when it is available.) The characters are well crafted and three dimensional. The plot moves forward and allows you to move with it, developing a sense of knowledge about the mythical land and the history of the area. The author has developed some original ideas and powers for characters that I have not seen in other books, which is delightful. My only complaint is that the map is small and I can't read details on my kindle. I tried to find a way to enlarge it to no avail. Although it isn't essential to the book, it would be fun to be able to read it...otherwise why even include it in the book?
I don't know what is wrong with the book but the font changes every three pages and you lose several sentences. It's way too annoying to want to read. I tried and gave up after two chapters. Kept having to go, wait, what? When entire sentences are missing you really lose the flow of information. It's stupid, the book might be good but I'll never know.
This is a good epic fantasy with a few twists and turns along the way. At times the book is overly long but I read it in three sittings and will look forward to the next in the series. The ending has some great teasers and I hope Callie Kanno dazzles us with book two, very soon.

The premise and the plot development is well done. A few of the characters were not developed sufficiently and what becomes of them in the story leaves me a bit put off (I will not say who or what happens since I do not want to give away any spoilers). Although a bit put off about what happened to some of the characters, I still recommend this book to others. Every so often I found a grammar/spelling error but in a book of this length, I am very pleased with the quality.

I recommend this book for fans of fantasy type fiction looking for a story with some new ideas.
